Stirring Up a Sense of Home

Nov 4, 2024

Oatley Park, belonging to the Bediagal people of the Eora Nation, is a significant gathering space along the Georges River, rich in Indigenous history and the diverse narratives of Australian colonisation and immigration. Within this park stands Oatley Castle, a testament to the community’s desire for home and connection, serving a vibrant population with 46% of residents born overseas, primarily from China, Nepal, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Inspired by Rirkrit Tiravanija’s “Untitled (Free)” (2012), this performative public art project invites the community to gather and share a meal of stirred fried rice prepared in the castle’s BBQ area, alongside ancient middens that reflect Indigenous lifestyles. Using rice, a staple food for many cultures, the work aim to symbolise nourishment and belonging. This act of cooking and sharing not only brings domestic life into the public sphere but also fosters dialogue around individual migration stories, home, identity, and our shared quest for connection in a multicultural society.
